Ben Beesley, Owner and Managing Director, Capital Resourcing Group explores how a careful and tailored approach to recruitment can pay off in today’s talent market.

Even with today’s talent challenges getting the right person for your organisation doesn’t need to be stressful or problematic: the talent is out there, people want to take on new projects and build their careers with exciting employers. By paying attention to the recruitment process, considering the possibilities and ensuring the search for talent is comprehensive you can find the right person for the right role and organisation every time.

Make no mistake – this is a difficult time for employers. With a raft of new employment legislation waiting in the wings, higher costs around employing people and a candidate pool who are increasingly demanding with regard to their working conditions and rewards, it is clear that hiring talent that doesn’t work out is something no HR department, CEO or even line manager wants to consider.

And yet recruitment is necessary if you want your business to progress. You cannot do more without investing in your people. Natural attrition will always mean you need to be ready to find great people to join your cause. You might need to meet the demands of a new project for your business, your organisation might benefit from some new thinking, skills or energy. But with every move forward, the risk of a wrong hire is there and no one can afford to squander the time and resources required to search, sift and properly consider a candidate. Recruitment has to bring value every time.

Getting priorities right

Securing talent through a recruitment service is one way to manage the work of finding excellent candidates. However, while there are some large recruiters operating in the market who could answer you call, these businesses may not always be ready to give your requirement the time and attention it needs. Faced with their own business challenges, their priority may be more towards high turnover and their own numbers and while you may be offered some good candidates, there’s always a chance that you simply get the talent currently on their books rather than the talent you actually need.

A more targeted, bespoke recruitment service can deliver much better results. Given today’s market a more personal approach will work to understand your business, requirements and options before taking a considered look at the talent available. An agile and responsive approach to recruitment can tap into new sources of talent and ensure the options will work within your business. In short, it’s a more personal service which addresses the entire employment scenario rather than pushing to get someone – anyone who looks suitable – through the door.

The result is securing talent that will contribute to your business swiftly and which will stay with your business. Your new talent doesn’t just bring value in the short term but because they are a better match retention is less of an issue, so value is retained in the business for longer.
